2006 Illinois Corn Planting Hitting Full Stride

Fred Below teaches corn physiology and he says soil conditions are good for growing.

He says planting in early April, as Illinois farmers have done the past two years, is not necessarily good for the crop. But many Illinois farmers are already finished putting their corn in the ground.

Larry Wernsing grows about 1,100 acres of corn and soybeans on his farm 30 miles south of Springfield. He says he finished planting last week.

Farther north, soil temperatures are lower and more rain has fallen so farmers are just beginning to plant.
