The amount of the grants ranges from $250,000 to nearly $2 million. Most of them are going to researchers and institutions in the Chicago area.

One researcher at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is getting more than $591,000.

Stem cells are cells that have the potential to develop into many different types of healthy new cells in the body.

Studying stem cells allows doctors to analyze how cells transform. Many of the most serious illnesses or birth defects are caused by problems during the transformation process.

The grantees are required to report their progress to the state.
