Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is pressuring his Republican opponent in the general election to support a gun control measure. IIn a letter to State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, Blagojevich urges her to back a proposed statewide ban on assault weapons and persuade Republican lawmakers to do the same. The ban has repeatedly failed in the Legislature amid concerns from downstate lawmakers and gun owners about improperly limiting gun rights. A message left for Topinka Saturday was not immediately returned. She has said there already are enough gun laws in Illinois and the legislation to ban assault weapons is riddled with problems. She has also said that the state should instead step up enforcement of existing gun laws.
