The man selected last month as the new Rockford police chief will not be coming to the city. David Purdy’s employment offer has been rescinded by the police and fire commission. The selection panel will not say why they have changed their minds. Commission member Sam Castree does tell us the selection will now return to the pool of candidates for the successor to Steve Pugh. He retired last November. Purdy's selection came with great fanfare last month. At that time, the commission said all that was needed was Purdy’s background check and final agreement on a contract. When we spoke with Purdy at that time, he was very confident there would be no problem.
