ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Since 6:00 this morning, people have been camping out to win free Chick-fil-A for a year. It’s all part of Chick-fil-A’s official grand opening tomorrow.
“It’s crazy and it is a lot of fun, but anyone that knows me knows that I just love to do this.”
21 isn’t the temperature outside, but the number of Chick-fil-A grand openings that Heide Rewerts has camped out for, all I a matter of 3 years. But today, is the coldest camp-out yet.
“Definitely the coldest and even though we were in Minnesota back in October and November, they were not this cold,” Rewerts said.
It looks like a camp ground, but Chick-fil-A is making sure these brave souls aren’t roughing it too much. They’re providing three meals, hot beverages and a bathroom.
The weather didn’t scare away first time camper Chris Thomas from Rockford. Thomas is quickly learning to embrace the cold.
“As long as you’re prepared, you dress in lots of warm clothes, bring some heaters out, it’s perfectly fine. We’re having a great time out here. No regrets, none.”
A free Chick-fil-A meal every week for a year is enticing in itself, but Thomas says the memories are more of a motivation. 12 hours ago, Thomas and a group of other men were stranger sand now they’re literally staying under the same roof.
“It’s more about the experience than it is about the food. I love going out and doing crazy stuff like this so it’s just been a blast.”
I’m glad that I get to be the one who opens up the door and finally lets them have their first bit of Chick-fil-A in Rockford said owner Anna-Lisa Horton.
As for Rewerts, she’s already planning her next grand opening which she hopes will be in warmer conditions.
“I’d definitely do it again, as long as it’s not any colder.”
People who were camping out today say the key to staying warm is to make sure you move around every once and a while to get your blood flowing.
Chick-fil-A says they’ve had 750 other grand openings where they’ve given away a year’s worth of free food, adding up to over $20 million in free chicken sandwiches.
