The B-M-W Three series and Lexus I-S have earned the silver "Top Safety Pick" designation for good performance in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's front and side crash tests. They also got acceptable ratings for their seat-head restraint designs in rear tests.
At the same time, the Ford Fusion, tested without its optional side airbags, earned the lowest overall ratings. The institute says it was the only car in a group that also included the Hyundai Sonata, Pontiac G-Six, Acura T-S-X, and Infiniti G-35 that didn't earn a good rating in the frontal test. Additionally, the Fusion got poor marks in the side test and a marginal rating for rear crash protection. A Ford spokesman says side air bags and side curtain bags would be standard on 2007 models built after September.
