Charter Schools

There's a different kind of school that's gaining popularity throughout the country. On Saturday local residents worked on starting a charter school in Rockford.

The biggest advantage of a charter school is choice. Many Rockford residents aren't happy with the schools their children are forced to attend.

Starting a charter school would give them a free alternative. Several Rockford leaders discussed that option at the Booker T Washington center today.

They hope a charter school would provide the curriculum needed for kids that are struggling. Chartering allows schools to run independently of the public school system and tailor their programs to community needs.

It's still a public school... But the funding comes with each child. Charter schools get a certain amount of money from the government for each student that attends. So the staff is motivated to keep children and parents happy... because the more students that attend... the more money the school gets.
