The Gomez family of Rockford heads into one of the pools Saturday at Coco Key. It's the family's "Plan B" this holiday weekend because of rising gas prices. "We were planning to go to the Wisconsin Dells for the weekend with my family, but our gas is just so high and ridiculous," Crystal Gomez said. Gomez says it costs about $60 to fill up her family's car. Add to that the costs of lodging and food and it's just too much to stay afloat. "It was just too much going back and forth so we decided to stay here and have family time," Gomez said. The Gomez family aren't the only local folks staying closer to home this weekend because of higher gas prices. In fact workers at Coco Key say they had between 300 and 500 walk-in guests alone Saturday, many of them complaining about high gas prices. "People tell us we were planning to go to places like the Wisconsin Dells or something like that, so we hear it from the guests," Manager Cody Campbell said. Campbell says some guests are staying the night at the Clock Tower Resort where Coco Key is located, making a mini-vacation out of the weekend. The Gomez family just made a day trip Saturday and still managed to have fun with the kids. "Just stay here, have a good time, don't pay so much for gas because we only live 20 minutes away," Gomez said. A shorter ride that's many Americans are taking this July 4th weekend , floating away the pain at the pump. AAA estimates some 600,000 Americans are staying home for the holiday weekend. The average cost of a gallon of regular was $4.10 Saturday. A year ago at this time, the average was just under $3. We also chekced in with Magic Waters. They said Saturday was the busiest day so far this summer. A worker tells 23 News that high gas prices probably contributed to the busy day.
