ROCKFORD (WIFR) – No matter which company the city decides should pick up our garbage, it sounds like we will be paying more to have our trash removed from the curb.
The city’s current garbage disposal contract is up at the end of this year and right now, council members are looking at four options, that all end with us paying more.
Right now we pay just under $11 for garbage pick-up alone. Over $15 a month total for sanitation, but some alderman say disposal costs are rising and companies are asking for more money. Right now, there are two bidders for a contract with the city. The current contract holder, Rock River Disposal, is going up against Advance Disposal, a company based in Davis Junction some folks say the higher rates don’t sit well with them.
“Living check to check is hard, every month or every year something is going up, the city is always out to get a buck here or there, a lot of the leaders today it’s all about that dollar bill,” said Rockford homeowner Moria Anthony.
The four options are:
-Garbage service stays the same, $2.56 more a month
-Unlimited Garbage pick-up, company supplies garbage and recycling totes, $3.92 more a month
-Unlimited garbage pick-up, company supplies a recycling tote, $2.90 more a month.
-Unlimited garbage pick-up, with 32 gallon recycling can supplied by company, $3.36 more a month.
The city’s finance and planning committee will go over the plans next Tuesday.
Alderman Tim Durkee tells us he’s expecting both companies to go back and forth a bit with their offers, as it’s still early in the process. It could still be weeks before the council gets a chance to approve a new contract.
