The Cook County medical examiner's office says 60-year-old Richard Francis was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Medical Center a little over an hour after the shooting this morning.

The suspect in the shooting was also taken to Illinois Masonic after being shot by other officers.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis calls Francis' death "a stark reminder" of the dangers Chicago's police officers face every day.

Weis says Francis noticed the woman engaged in a disturbance and stopped to investigate. Police say she gained control of the officer's weapon during a struggle and shot him.
