UPDATE: 6-Year-old Hit by Car Identified

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Detectives say they are starting to wrap up their investigation into the death of six-year-old Yamiko Key.

The child, police say, was accidentally run over by his mother. Right now, investigators are calling the tragedy, a freak accident, although the department still needs to run the case by the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Police say Key was near an open car door when his mom’s foot came off the brake pedal, causing her to reverse and sweep the child under the car.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The 6-year-old boy who police say was hit by a car Thursday afternoon has died from his injuries and we're learning tonight his mother was behind the wheel.

Police say it was a tragic accident. The child was run over at 5:00 p.m. in the 400 block of Chicago Avenue.

Detectives say the boy ran over to his 50-year-old mom's car and was standing near an open door, that's when the mothers foot came off the brake pedal causing her car to go in reverse.

Investigators say the child was knocked to the ground by the door and pushed under the vehicle which caused the mother to drive on top of her child.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he later died. The names of the mother and victim are not being released.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A six-year-old boy has been rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car.

Police tell us it happened just before 5:00 on Chicago Avenue. Police aren’t releasing much information, but say the boy is in critical condition.
