ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A major Stateline construction project is expected to cause significant delays this fall and it all starts Monday. The plan is to shut down the East State Street entrance and exit ramps to I-90 for nearly two months, which could mean a huge hit to local businesses.

“Travelers are not stopping by, they avoid construction.”

Nipa Patel says it’s been a slow couple of weeks at her Subway restaurant on East State Street near I-90 and she’s worried the seats in her business won’t be filling up anytime soon, since the main route to get to her business will close Monday.

“It’s been affecting our business, we’ve been slow, I mean most highway customers, we’re not getting those,” Patel said.

The State Street interchange project will rebuild all four ramps which allow drivers to access I-90. Starting Monday, both eastbound entrance and eit ramps will be shut down for six weeks. It may be a hassle for soe travelers, however some motel managers say they don’t believe they’ll have a problems booking rooms for traveling customers.

“We’ve sent them maps with the closure and alternative routes to take. I think we expect a fairly good month. I know it’s just a temporary road closure so we’re not expecting a huge impact from that,” said Lisa Nelson, the Sales Manager for the Best Western Clock Tower Resort.

Yet, Patel says she hopes road signs can redirect her customers and revive her business.

It should be noted the westbound ramps toward Wisconsin will be open during construction. Buses that use the state street exit will still drop off passengers at the clock tower, they’ll just probably run a few minutes late.
