ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rock River YMCA and the Rockford Ski Broncs Ski Team came together to teach 4 teenagers from the Rock House Kids Teen Leaders group how to swim…and water ski.
Nancy Jenkins, YMCA Group VP, Carla Logan, YMCA Aquatics Coordinator, and Kelly Vinje, Gordon Flesch Company, all worked together to provide Rock House Kids with 4 afternoons of swim lessons so they could work towards passing a swim test, with the ultimate goal of being able to learn how to water ski with the Rockford Ski Broncs. All 4 kids passed the swim test and they participated in the “Learn to Ski” clinic, sponsored by the Ski Broncs, on Saturday morning, August 17th. Members of the Ski Broncs, Duayne Beggs and Rob Pace, made it a morning to remember as each child made multiple appearances on water skis on the Rock River. It was a morning of smiles as the teens worked with the ski team.
This opportunity taught 4 teen leaders how to swim for the first time and made a few of them much stronger in the water. They learned to tread water, swim using multiple strokes, and dive – many for the first time. Rock House Kids is an organization that seeks to feed at risk inner city children from ages 4 to 18 years old – these children are exposed to homelessness, drug use, and crimes of all types. They do not normally have opportunities like this and couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. The teens had to work towards a goal and were then rewarded for achieving that goal – many called this an experience of a lifetime. Thank You Rock River YMCA and Rockford Ski Broncs Water Skiing Team for all your volunteer hours!
