Kayak Proposal

Kyakers continue to push for a Whitewater course for Rockford. Right now the city is reviewing petitions to build the course near the Fordam Dam on the Rock River.

Water sport fans say this would not only revitalize the downtown area but draw a number of tourists.

Jim Talkington, owner of Paddle and Trail in Loves Park says, "A lot of people feel this would be great because we wouldn't have to deal with the Chicago traffic. So I think you would get input from Iowa and the entire Midwest would do well."

Rockford is still negotiating with Com Ed to buy 15 acres near the dam. The kayak rapids course would be at the south end of downtown, just north of the Morgan Street Bridge.

This plan ties together with river district plans to redevelop the Com Ed property, as an active recreation park complete with whitewater rapids. Positive feedback is already flowing into area kayaking stores.

The project is still in the early development stages, but funding is set aside to pursue plans.
