WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) --An anonymous tipster using the app launched by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office helps police get more than 100 pounds of pot off the streets of Rockford.
Detectives say information texted in to the county’s app, TIP WCSO, led to the arrest of 35-year-old Sergio Pelayocervantes. He's charged with manufacturing and possession of marijuana. Investigators seized 125 pounds of pot from a home on the city's northwest side. Detectives say they received information on this case less than a week after the county’s free app went live. The program removes your personal information so police won't know your name and phone number, eliminating the "fear factor" of coming forward
“There’s always the fear of coming forward and identifying yourself, pointing your finger at someone. This is just another method where people can do that, provide bits and pieces of information to the police that lead us in the right direction. They can do it anonymously but they're doing the right thing," says Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro.
So far, the department has received more than 200 tips from the new program and investigators hope more people will use this confidential way to do the right thing and report criminal activity.
