Residents living in the Meadows of Springbrook say they are shocked. They got letters from the City of Rockford telling them they may be forced to annex with Rockford.
John Cover bought his home last year. He feels he did his homework before buying but feels he was misinformed by city administration about efforts to bring his neighborhood into the city limits.
City planners say they are ready to work with residents. The process, they say, is fair and legal because the land involved is small, less than 60 acres. Planners believe it will be a benefit to Springbrook because annexation will provide full time police and fire protection, along with city water.
Residents are concerned not only about the process, but the accompanying the tax increase which would come from being in the city. Their property taxes which average about three thousand dollars per year could jump as much as 30 percent.
The city indicates the hike will likely be around 25 percent. The Rockford city council will meet with residents next week to discuss the proposed annexation
