UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A scary situation on the south side of Rockford today, after a body was found in the Rock River.
Police received a call from construction workers about a body in the river under the Morgan Street Bridge just before 11 a.m. this morning. Within minutes the body had floated down the river, when dive crews recovered it near Marinelli Field just south of the 15th Avenue bridge. The coroner says the body was badly decomposed and appears to have been in the river for a few months.
We’re told the body belonged to a white man, possibly in his 40’s. The coroner says the deceased was wearing jeans and a long sleeved, blue, striped dress shirt with tennis shoes. He did not have a wallet or any identification on him.
The cause of death is still unknown, but the coroner says they did not see any immediate signs of traumer, however the body was covered in a lot of mud. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow and the teeth will be examined Friday to try to match dental records.
UPDATE: Authorities confirm that the body found in the river is a white male, and they say he could've been in the river for a couple of months.
