Rolling Green Neighborhood Keeping a Watchful Eye Out for Thieves

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Neighbors in Rockford's Rolling Green neighborhood say they're on the lookout for thieves stealing precious metal from vacant homes.

Copper pipe theft is a big problem throughout the city but it's relatively new for that neighborhood. Neighborhood watch leaders say Rockford Police warned them to be on the lookout for two men driving around in a dark green Pontiac Aztek and breaking into unoccupied homes to remove copper piping. Residents say they're going to do what it takes to catch the crooks and they're calling on the entire community to get involved.

"I know most people are worried that if somebody sees them looking at them and then the officer goes to their home then they can come back,” 8th Ward Alderman Jeanne Oddo said. “You can tell them ‘I don't want an officer at the door,’ and they won't come to their door."

Police arrested a man for trying to steal copper piping from the southeast side of the neighborhood. It's believed he's not connected to this latest problem.
