Federal Aviation Administration officials said Tuesday the $5.5 million navigation update will help steer pilots toward runways even when they're tough to see during severe weather.
The FAA also announced other long-range changes. It plans to add new arrival and departure routes, install a back-up radar system and build two more air traffic control towers.
The changes are in addition to the city's $15 billion O'Hare expansion plan. That plan would reduce flight delays by reconfiguring runways, adding others and building another terminal.
