Some residents and businesses are still without water and will remain without water until some time Wednesday.
Maintenance crews have not only worked on the broken line at Jefferson and Rockton but others as well, indicating that many of Rockford’s old water pipes are in a serious state of deterioration.
Folks at the Water Department say the recent cold snap is to blame for water pipe problems. When the pipe joints freeze they expand, causing the ground to shift and then the pipes burst. Many of the city’s underground water pipes are a hundred years old and are replaced on a regular basis; however, the overall replacement needs far outstrip what is available to spend on this type of work annually.
