"He was my retirement plan, my future, my son. Everything," Joe Coy said.
When the phone rang at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a father's real life nightmare began.
"It's an experience I don't wish on anyone. Children should have to bury their parents. Parents shouldn't have to bury their children," Coy said.
The news: Coy's son and business partner - 21-year-old Jason - was dead, hit by a car as he crossed this portion of U.S. Route 20 near Freeport. Police say the driver - 31-year-old John Pokorny - had a blood above the legal limit. He was charged with driving under the influence, a charge the victim's father believes isn't tough enough.
"The parents that have lost children, or to the parents that are concerned, I don't want this gentlemen on the road. I don't want him to lose his license for three months and be back on the road and kill somebody else," Coy said.
Jason's death is equally devastating for his longtime friends. Many sat quietly sobbing as they looked at old pictures, of the buddy so full of smiles, and life.
"If you are going to drink, don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle. That's why there's designated drivers, that's why there's cabs," Coy said.
The news no family ever wants to hear, a reality the family must now forever bear.
