The senators' reaction to President Bush's State of the Union speech Tuesday night mirrors the reaction of several other Illinois members of Congress. Republicans generally were supportive of Bush's economic proposals, while Democrats criticized them.
Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky called Bush a “one-trick pony,” saying he offers tax cuts for the wealthy in response to every situation.
But Republican Congressman Henry Hyde said Bush made it clear that the economy is critically important, dispelling suggestions that he is focused solely on Iraq.
Republican Congressman John Shimkus said he agrees with the president that Saddam Hussein must be dealt with now rather than later.
