Edward Keister trudges through the water to get from his home to dry land. Forget about the car in his neighborhood. Waiters are your best bet. "About two feet before I'm threatened in the house and in the worst case scenario I'll live upstairs," Keister said. Keister is toughing it out in this neighborhood near Freeport as flooding from the rising Pecatonica river creeps up his driveway. He's seen water levels go up and down. He's stays put to protect his home now reflected in the flooding. "If you move out the looters will come and take your stuff," Keister said. From neighborhoods to farms, these corn and been fields have practically turned into lakes because of all the flooding. The owners say it's cut his season short. "It's just one of those years we don't even have a chance," Robert Ostendorf said. Ostendorf says he's never seen the high waters linger on for so long in the 42 years he's farmed this land. He estimates losing about hundred thousand dollars in crops. "It be nice making some money on the corn and bean market, but it's just one of those things," Ostendorf said. One of those things that's making life a little harder to wade through right now. But flood victims say it could be worse. "You just deal with it, be thankful we don't got like what's over in Iowa and Wisconsin," Keister said. "We've got our home, our health, our family, you can always find someone in worse shape than you," Ostendorf said. Some residents in Keister's neighborhood have evacuated since the flooding started on Monday. He says electricity was turned off at one home. Some folks remaining there, including himself, are using boats to get around. Stephenson County authorities say we could see the river rise to nearly 16 feet by Saturday. That's information they received from National Weather Service. And if that's the case, that would mean voluntary evacuations from homes.
