The Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross in Freeport has already sent almost 40 volunteers to the gulf coast. And many more want to go.
But it is not as simple as packing up and heading south. Before responding to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Red Cross volunteers trained for disaster relief here in the Stateline.
They also had to meet several national requirements. But thankfully the Red Cross has more people ready to volunteer than coordinators can keep track of. Those that are selected have to be dedicated to the cause.
