Without snow there can be no Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition.
The Rockford Park district says the 17th annual competition is canceled. The event had been on hold waiting for a storm since the originally scheduled opener Wednesday. It's the first time the state's premier snow sculpting show has been canceled.
The district needs an overall accumulation of about three inches of snow to pack the crates that form blocks used by sculptors.
The lack of snow is also threatening the United States National Snow Sculpting Championship in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, scheduled for the end of this month. Competition organizers there are watching the weather.
