As Janesville continues to roll-out new SUVs, the government looks to crack down on SUV manufacturers.
Tuesday, the Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta called for a change in the fuel efficiency standards for pick-ups, sport utility vehicles and mini-vans. The secretary wants to divide light trucks into six categories based on size with the smallest vehicles required to get better gas mileage.
Wisconsin's Gov. Jim Doyle says for plants like Janesville's it is vital for their existence.
"If they don't increase their mileage per gallon their going to fall behind in the competition. People at these prices are going to continue to look for ways to save money and their going to look for more fuel efficient cars" said Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle.
Standards would be raised for most light trucks beginning in 2008 and completed by 2011.
