Walmart is not only rolling back prices they're also planning to roll out another supercenter store. The newest proposed Walmart would be located near South Alpine and Linden Road and would become the Stateline’s sixth supercenter.
The number of Wal-Mart’s in the Stateline rivals that of bigger cities like Milwaukee.
Milwaukee has a population more than three times that of Rockford yet the companies building just as many stores here.
“Wal-Mart’s a sophisticated company. Everytime you purchase something that purchase goes into a computer system. That’s analyzed and we may be purchasing at a higher rate than the population purchase in Milwaukee." says Janyce Fadden of the Rockford Area Economic Development Council.
Population and housing are also major factors when a company decides where to put a new store. Walmart now has two Supercenters on Riverside located just a short car ride away. Raising the question of how many is too many when a company places stores so close together.
“Similar to a few years ago when questions were raised to Walgreens and yet that is their strategy. Within an arms reach from your home and Walmart may be thinking that’s also a solution.” adds Fadden
Wal-Mart’s growing at such a fast rate it's no surprise there ready and willing to invest millions in so many new stores. Once the sixth supercenter opens they'll become one of the largest employers in the Stateline.
Plans for the new supercenter on South Alpine call for a 2-hundred thousand square-foot building, a garden center and a gas station. The site would also include more than 1,000 parking spaces.
