One man is dead after being shot by an off-duty Rockford police officer. Police say the man was attempting to rob the u-s bank branch on 11th Street.
Rockford police sped to the scene they arrived to find that an off-duty police officer, working in-uniform as a security guard for the bank, had shot and killed an attempted robber.
Rockford Police Chief Steve Pugh, in his first day on the job, says, “The weapon the suspect was flashing looked like a semi-automatic, but when the gun dropped to the floor the officer discovered it was a pellet gun.”
But Pugh says his officers are trained to respond exactly like the officer did.
The officer is a patrolman for the Rockford Police and has been on the force for about three years. Police say they will release his name Thursday morning.
As for the suspect, he was a white male approximately in his forties. Police say he is possibly wanted for four other robberies on Rockford’s east side.
