Volunteers aren't the only ones headed south, 75 state employees from Illinois went to Louisiana to get refugees signed up for government programs. Three of them are from right here in the Stateline.

In a little more than a week, Illinois state employees registered more than 25,000 evacuees in Louisiana for social service benefits. They signed them up for emergency food stamps, unemployment benefits, temporary housing and other assistance. Rosalinda Marquez was part of this group.

When she heard the state was looking for volunteers to go down south, she jumped to the opportunity. Marquez couldn't believe what she saw when she arrived.

"It looked like someone threw a bunch of toothpicks around, but they were houses everywhere,” Marquez comments.
