A doctor at Rockford's Surgical Service with OSF Regional Heart Institute is the first surgeon in Illinois to perform a certain type of closed chest surgery.
Doctor James Locher is using a minimally invasive FDA approved microwave ablation treatment called micromaze. Micromaze is used to treat atrial fibrillation. It's a type of heart arrhythmia that affects more than two million Americans. Usually open he4art surgery is used to treat the illness.
Doctor Locher says the new procedure uses small incisions, and it eliminates all symptoms for about 80 percent of patients who are treated.
