Medicare Changes

Medicare is about to undergo some major changes. The Secretary of the US Health and Human Services Department was in Rockford Thursday to educate beneficiaries about the new plan.

During a town hall meeting, Mike Leavitt outlined the basics - namely that all Medicare beneficiaries will be eligible for prescription drug coverage. The changes go into effect January 1, 2006. Those on Medicare will have to choose a Rx program that's best for them as well as one that works well with their state benefits; and that, most agree, has been extremely confusing.

“It’s not that confusing, perhaps when you sit down and look at it all, but you don’t have to know about all plans, just what plan is best for you and then sign up for it,” explains Leavitt.

Medicare beneficiaries can expect to receive a flyer outlining the changes in the mail by October. Enrollment begins November 15. If you have questions call 1-800-MEDICARE.
