A busy night at city council has aldermen buzzing about being on the brink of one of the city's biggest employment booms in years.

Monday night, the city council unanimously approved to both re-zone and annex hundreds of acres of property on Montague Road and Harrison Avenue.

The home improvement giant Lowe’s wants to build a regional distribution center on the land, a center which will add between 400 and 500 full-time jobs.

The city and the corporation still must work out a development agreement, which among other things, would work out subsidies and tax incentives for the facility.

That plan is still being ironed between the two parties, and could be voted on within two weeks.

"It’s good for the city of Rockford, and especially good for the Fifth Ward and the west side. It gives us the ability to be competitive and when we get national companies like that it does nothing but enhance our economic base as well as employment," Alderman Victory Bell said.

Lowe's leaders tell 23 News they're hopeful to begin construction on the distribution center sometime in August.

This, assuming the city council approves a development agreement in the next two weeks.
