In a vote of 23 to 1 the Winnebago County Board voted to give Lowes a $186,000 tax break to build a regional distribution center in Rockford.
Board members say the decision to give real estate tax abatements to large companies bringing jobs to the area is an easy one. The distribution center would bring over 500 full time jobs and millions of dollars into Rockford. Board member say local government should do everything in their power to bring Fortune 500 companies to the city to jump start the economy.
Pete Mckay, the one board member who voted against the tax abetment, said big companies can afford to pay full taxes. The other board members argued that bringing jobs to Winnebago Co. is the only thing that matters.
