It was a busy night for law enforcement personnel marred by the first traffic fatality of the New Year.
A woman was killed near the intersection of 8th Avenue and 18th Street early Wednesday morning. Rockford police say an SUV slammed into her car and then sped off. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the SUV was caught later. Police say alcohol was a factor in the fatal accident. The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released at this time. Rockford and Winnebago County authorities handed out a number of drunk driving tickets Tuesday night.
Dekalb County authorities report at least six drinking-related violations on New Year's Eve.
