The judges are coming, and downtown Rockford leaders are doing their best to make sure our city blossoms a win.
Rockford is competing with five other cities in the America in Bloom competition. We're planting it out with places like Ft. Wayne, Indiana and St. Paul, Minnesota.
River district leaders volunteered their green thumbs Friday, beautifying our downtown city streets with planters.
Kim Wheeler, director of the River District, says a win will mean national recognition for Rockford, but more importantly, she says the competition has inspired people to take more pride in their city.
“Just seeing people plant plants in these areas where normally there’d be weeds, that’s just really exciting,” says Wheeler.
Judges for America in Bloom will be in town next week. We'll be judged on beautification, cleanliness, litter programs as well as historic preservation.
