The man accused of shooting an off-duty Rockford police detective to death is set to go on trial Jan. 9.
Twenty-year-old William Buck is charged with first-degree murder in the August 2001 death of Detective Kevin Rice. Rice was off-duty when he was shot in the chest several times.
Buck's trial has been postponed several times to give defense attorneys more time to prepare. But attorneys from both sides say they're now ready.
Prosecutors said they’d seek the death penalty if Buck is convicted.
A Lake County jury will hear the trial because of extensive publicity in Winnebago County.
