Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed legislation that will reinstate the annual writing test, beginning in the 2006-2007 school year.
State budget problems led Illinois to cut the test last year in an effort to save about $6 million, but the move drew criticism from educators nationwide.
Under the new law, students in the fifth, eighth and eleventh grades will take the writing exams in the first year. Sixth graders will be added to the list in 2007-2008, and the third grade will be added the year after that.
