Compassionate, friendly, and kind. That's how family and friends describe 19-year-old Ashley Simpson.

Her stepfather, Mark Carlson, has played the role of her father for 10 years. He says Ashley loved her eight brothers and sisters.

Her stepfather, Mark Carlson, says, "She was always carrying one around on her hip."

Ashley was with her brother when she was struck by a pickup truck Friday night. It has been very hard on him and her family. She just graduated from Harlem High School. Her neighbors say she had lots of friends there.

Ashley's mom, Peggy and Mark can't understand why the man who's charged with hitting her stopped and then drove off. They hope her death will save lives by showing people they need to drive slower on 251.

She has already saved 57 people with skin donations. On the Simpson's door hangs a wreath. Peggy hopes it will bring good luck to the rest of the family, a sign of hope in these trying times.
