The public meeting happened at the Rockford Environmental Science Academy on Ogilby Road from the Rockford Park District.

In April 2004, residents gave their input on what they'd like to go on this land, bought from the Illinois DNR in 1996. That proposal included four soccer fields, three ball diamonds, basketball courts and a large picnic shelter.

The public meeting will see what, if any, changes residents want from their original park proposal. Leaders are excited about the unique recreational opportunity in southwest Rockford.

The park would cost about $580,000 to build. Half of the funds would come from the Rockford Park District. The other half park leaders hope will come from both Illinois’ DNR and state legislative grants.

The Rockford Park District plans to apply for grants for the Southwest Community Park on July 1. A response should come in early December. If approved, construction could begin in the spring of 2006.
