Around 10 Monday morning, the Rockford Fire Department responded to the PSB after a postal worker discovered a granular substance leaking from a package.
The package was addressed to an inmate being held at the jail. The package had been shipped from the state prison in Canton.
As a precautionary measure, the Fire Department taped off the area to insure that the unknown substance didn't contaminate the driver or the vehicle. The Winnebago County Health Department tested the substance and determined that it didn't contain any hazardous materials.
Rockford Fire Department District Chief Kent Hulett says the white, powdery substance resembled laundry soap. Hulett says in the post 9/11 world in which we live, authorities have to take every precautionary measure when a situation like this arises.
After the box was cleared, a representative from the U.S. Postal Service took control of the package.
