For many bargain shoppers, this Memorial Day weekend provides a chance to find the right support.
From 32 A to 42 DDD, these bras are all donated to the breast yard sale in town. Karen Virnoche Brown started this event three years ago, and each year more and more strangers send new and like-new support her way. Maidenform provided 400 new pieces of lingerie. People she's never even met sent her some barely used bras.
Karen states, "We usually get 300 used, and this year we got 600, so it's amazing."
This year Karen needed some extra reinforcement, as she just finished chemo on May 11, 2005. For the past couple of months her friends and family have provided the hope she needed during her battle with anal canal cancer. Those involved with this sale say it helps bolster the discussion of an often hush-hush topic.
Mary Virnoche, who is Karen’s sister and a major supporter, says, "To be able to talk about this is great. So many times with that part of our body you can't initiate a conversation, so having bras hanging from trees really is one way to start the conversation."
This sale also serves a healing process for those who have beat cancer.
Karen tells 23 News, "Whether it's a cancer survivor or someone who knows someone, family or friends. Saying, ‘hey, there this is and did you check out this,’ that's why I do it."
The breast yard sale is Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Oregon. Just go to 1194 Mud Creek Road and look for the women's lingerie hanging on trees. On Saturday the yard sale takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
On Sunday it's from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Monday the sale goes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. All the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
