A serious car crash claims the life of a Rockford man Tuesday tying up a busy Rockford intersection for hours.
Paula Clevenger witnessed the gruesome wreck at main and riverside. Police say a car heading south on main waiting at a red light was rear ended by this truck, which some witnesses say was moving erratically down the road. The car flipped into the air and burst into flames, killing the 50-year-old man in the car.
Investigators were on the scene much of the afternoon trying to figure out exactly what happened.
While rescuers could not save the man, witnesses like Clevenger helped pull the driver of the truck from his fiery vehicle.
"We were afraid to approach the truck because it was on fire. I just proceeded to scream at him to get him out of there. The two guys pulled him out,” Clevenger says.
The driver of the truck was transported to Rockford Memorial and treated for minor injuries. Police are still investigating the wreck to determine who was at fault
