Dozens of elementary and middle school students in the Belvidere School District received his speech training, but on Tuesday, a former employee faces aggravated criminal sexual abuse and child pornography charges.
The employee's name is David Dunnavan, a speech therapist during 2002-2003 in Belvidere's school district. Dunnavan is behind bars in New Mexico after pleading no contest last month on a charge of sexual exploitation of children.
New Mexico authorities contacted Belvidere's school district after Dunnavan's no contest plea in April. Police say Dunnavan was involved with a video, allegedly showing inappropriate images of a young female.
District 100, Belvidere police and Illinois' Department of Children and Family Services began a local investigation, resulting in the child pornography and sexual abuse charges.
Dunnavan's speech therapy work took him to Belvidere Central Middle School, Belvidere South Middle School and Perry Elementary in 2002 and 2003.
Authorities wouldn't comment on whether any Belvidere students were involved with the child pornography. District Superintendent Don Scholmann says the district has placed two administrators involved with Dunnavan's hiring on administrative leave.
Belvidere's district officials also contacted the parents of students who had speech work with Dunavan. Superintendent Schlomann says Dunnavan was hired with the same screening process as any other district employee or teacher.
