The areas first significant snowfall caught many people off guard. As the snow started to accumulate, streets quickly became snow-covered and slick. For motorists who failed to recognize the conditions, it caused police to be swamped with calls.
The accumulation also caused the Rockford Streets Department to issue a snow emergency and deploy 15 plows and salt trucks to keep up with area streets. Overnight they will lay salt on arterial streets.
Many people were also unprepared for this amount of snow. So there was a mad dash to find snow scrapers and shovels. But for others the snow was a perfect opportunity to have a little fun.
Winnebago County Sheriff's Department and Rockford Police both implemented their emergency accident plans. They say that when this is in effect, they are receiving a high volume of calls and have to answer them in order of importance. They ask that you should just exchange information and file a report later.
