He was inaugurated at a mass in St. Peter's Square in front of thousands of faithful Catholics.

Pope Benedict the 16th offered his first homily to half a million people. Speaking in Latin and Italian, the pontiff promised to listen to the voices of the more than one billion Roman Catholics and to reach out to believers and non-believers alike.

He specifically mentioned shared bonds with other Christians and Jews. Absent from his words were any political messages or mention of Islam.

Many special masses were held Sunday for the new Pope Benedict the 16th. At St. Peter's Cathedral the pews were filled with parishioners. Some parishioners say he is the ideal successor to Pope John Paul II.

Still, others say it's too early to know how he will lead the Catholic Church. Rockford Diocese Bishop Thomas Doran lead the special mass.
