An early morning house fire claims the life of a Rockford woman.
Firefighters say the blaze started around 2:45 Wednesday morning at 1811 Loomis. Firefighters rescued 37-year-old Deneen Jones within minutes of arrival and began treating her for burns.
Jones was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital where she later died of her injuries. Firefighters believe she was trying to get everyone out of the house when she was overcome by heat and smoke.
A young boy was also rescued from the basement and was not injured. Firefighters say the house had no working smoke detectors. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Damage is estimated at $35,000.
