Rockford Diocese Bishop Thomas Doran believes the new pope will continue the late John Paul II's legacy, but also stand on his own two feet.
Doran praised the Cardinals’ choice of German Joseph Ratzinger by the conclave. Doran met Pope Benedict XVI in the 1980s, describing him as a simple but intellectual leader who speaks only after he thinks.
The bishop believes the new pope's top priorities will be introducing new Catholics to the church, and reintroducing the many Catholics who lost their faith.
Doran argues the new pope's selection places one of the best theologians to lead the church.
Bishop Doran will celebrate a special mass of thanksgiving this Sunday morning at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Rockford to commemorate the new pope.
