Hamilton Sundstrand Expansion

The manufacturing picture in Rockford is getting rosier. Hamilton Sundstrand landed a multi-billion dollar contract last year to supply parts for Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner. Now the company is gearing up to fill those orders.

A brand new industry-leading facility will help them do just that. It's the only building of its kind and it'll be right here in Rockford.

Hamilton Sundstrand broke ground on the 12,000 square foot facility Monday. It may not look like much now, but when complete, workers inside the two-story building will help integrate systems for Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner.

They’ll work on projects such as creating an electrical system to generate all the electricity on the planes.

They make air conditioning systems and even cooling systems for food on the planes.

It's a major project and a big investment, one that Hamilton Sundstrand worked extremely hard to get.

“We have a lot of tough competition in the aerospace industry and it says that the people of Hamilton Sundstrand convinced Boeing that we can do this task better than anyone they could select,” says Tim Morris, president of Hamilton Sundstrand’s Aerospace Power Systems.

Several hundred people will be working on this project, and not just in that new building.

Suppliers and Hamilton Sundstrand plants throughout the country will make parts for the systems, but they'll all end up here in Rockford to be developed into a complete aircraft system.
