Disputes Block Progress on Illinois Malpractice Bills

The only point of agreement may be that doctors need a break from the skyrocketing price of malpractice insurance.
Everything else, from the cause of higher costs to solutions for them, is a source for argument.
Lawmakers haven't given up on taking action during the two months left in the schedule for their spring legislative session. A Democratic proposal is likely to be discussed this week.
But accomplishing anything substantial will require compromise between the doctors and insurance companies who want to change the legal system and the lawyers who blame the problem on insurers.
It will also require Democrats and Republicans to work together, letting go of a political issue where each party can blame the other for inaction.
