The governor's office says renovations will add flexibility as Chrysler prepares to manufacture new products in early 2006. The company has not announced which new vehicles it intends to produce at the northern Illinois facility.
Company spokeswoman Mary Beth Halprin says Chrysler is still deciding how it will fill the job vacancies. But she says workers who have been laid off will get the opportunity to return.
Around 2,200 people are employed at the plant.
The entire announcement is available here on Wednesday afternoon.
